The vocational training includes a variety of general construction skills. Participants are given hands-on instruction in an actual construction environment. Additionally, we are equipping individuals with the life-skills needed to make the transition from lacking vocational and life skills to becoming more productive, goal-oriented, self-confident and self-sufficient.
Life Skills Training:
This program will teach life skills through a series of workshops and classes. The workshops will focus on self-awareness, coping skills, job skills, goal setting, finance management, and job etiquette. This training will be reinforced through the vocational training components, which will offer hands-on, interactive instruction.
Education Services (GED):
This program prepares trainees for all parts of the General Education Development (GED) exam. In a classroom setting, trainees will receive rigorous instruction in mathematics, language arts/writing, computer skills, and reading to gain competency of the materials needed to successfully pass the GED exam. Teacher instruction, group activities, individual participation, and computer-assisted instruction are utilized for remedial or supplemental activities.
Counseling Services:
For trainees that wish to utilize this service, there will be four components that they will undergo: assessment, counseling, referral, and follow-up. During the assessment, the trainee will thoroughly review and analyze their problem(s) to gain a complete understanding or how they are affected. In the counseling component, a trained and certified counselor will teach trainees specific strategies and techniques to help them address and resolve their problems. (The problems addressed will be those that have an effect on job performance and include, though are not limited to, those related to drug and alcohol abuse, emotional, family and work adjustment.) Afterwards, if it is determined that a trainee requires long-term assistance, this program will refer them to an agency/provider within their local community. Support will be provided from the following organizations: Unity Parenting & Counseling Center, Mount Sinai, and Link Community Development.

The reading of construction blueprints is a foundational skill in construction. All construction professionals, regardless of whether they are working in the field or in the office, must know how to read blueprints. Blueprint reading is not terribly difficult but it does require practice and some basic knowledge of blueprints. This course is designed to provide students with that foundational knowledge and enough practice at reading blueprints to get them started. Mastery of blueprint reading will come with practice and with using blueprints on the job on a regular basis.
